Stephen J. Lyons is a founding member of the Boston, Massachusetts, law firm of Klieman & Lyons which he founded with his law partner, Rikki Klieman, in 1984. Appointed to the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1971, he: graduated Northeastern University (BS 1977) attended the Sloan School of Management at MIT and graduated Northeastern Law School in 1980. Following law school, he served as a law clerk to the Justices of the Massachusetts Superior Court and as an associate with the law firm of Esdaile, Barrett & Esdaile. He was admitted to the Massachusetts Bar on December 19, 1980; United States District Court on January 30, 1981; United States Court of Appeals on January 9,1985; United States Tax Court on February 14, 1985; and the Supreme Court of the United States on April 1, 1985. In November of 1995, he was admitted to the District of Columbia Bar as well as the District of Columbia Court of Appeals.
Stephen J. Lyons has more than twenty years of experience litigating major civil and criminal cases. Mr. Lyons is perhaps best known for his defense of David and Ginger Twitchell, Christian Science parents who were acquitted of manslaughter charges in the death of their child who received spiritual healing rather than medical care. He is also well known for his prosecution of several groundbreaking product liability actions and civil suits in the areas of personal injury law, medical malpractice, aviation disaster litigation, intellectual property disputes involving patent, trademark and copyright litigation in the entertainment and high tech fields and on behalf of victims of clergy sexual abuse. A number of these cases have received national recognition and he has appeared as a legal commentator on 60 Minutes; CNN, The McNeil News Hour; 20/20; Court TV; the BBC; and, virtually every national and local news network. He also has experience in international law and has appeared pro hoc vice in the High Court of Hong Kong.
In handling business matters for a wide range of corporate clients from the smallest start-up to his representation of major corporations and non-profit institutions Mr. Lyons is known for his practical, highly focused, proactive approach often guiding business clients toward the most efficient and inexpensive issue resolution, counseling them in ways that effectively avoids disputes and explores the most effective dispute resolution methods including non-litigation alternatives such as mediation and arbitration.
Mr. Lyons teaches the course ‘Law & Technology’ at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has also lectured at Northeastern Law School and Boston University School of Law on civil trial advocacy and the preparation of witnesses for trial. He has worked with first year law students as part of the Esdaile Moot Court Program at Boston University School of Law which is named for J. Newton Esdaile for whom Mr. Lyons worked as an intern in law school. Mr. Lyons has also been featured as a lecturer on trial advocacy, expert witnesses and legal ethics for continuing legal education seminars sponsored by the Massachusetts Bar Association, MCLE, MTLA, the National Business Institute and other organizations. In addition, his many affiliations include memberships in the Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts and American Bar Associations as well as The Association of Trial Lawyers of America and Massachusetts Trial Lawyers Association. He was elected to \'\'Who\'s Who Among Rising Young Americans" for 1990-1991 and is the author of several published articles on tort, constitutional law, civil litigation and intellectual property.
In his spare time, Mr. Lyons competes in the sport of triathlon. He has competed internationally in both the Ironman and Olympic distances and is the 2003 ITU Long Course National Champion for his age group.
